How Plastic Packaging EPR works
From obligation to certificate to filing — in plain language.
What it covers
Plastic packaging that producers, importers and brand owners (PIBOs) place on the Indian market — product packaging, carry bags and multilayered packaging.
Who is obligated
PIBOs register on the CPCB centralised EPR portal and receive annual targets based on the plastic packaging they introduce.
Who generates credits
Registered Plastic Waste Processors — recyclers, co-processors, waste-to-energy, waste-to-oil and industrial composting units — generate EPR certificates for verified quantities processed.
How compliance is shown
PIBOs acquire certificates against each category, then file an annual return by 30 June. Shortfalls can attract environmental compensation.
